Learning - STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

Primary Science

The EDHS Primary STEM Lab is in its 3rd exciting year for all primary students in Years 1 to Year 6. It is a fantastic space for students to explore science concepts, supported with hands on learning activities using technology, engineering and mathematics in a collaborative and challenging environment.

We are developing partnerships with local organisations to deliver rich and meaningful learning experiences with lasting positive memories of education.

Secondary Science

Involves students from Years 7 to 12 and follows the Western Australian Curriculum. Areas of focus include Biological, Physical, Chemical and Earth & Space Sciences. As well, students look at Science as a Human Endeavour and develop the skills to undertake scientific investigations through Science Inquiry Skills.

Wherever possible, links are made between the amazing environment of our local area and the curriculum. For example our Year 9 students are involved in a turtle tagging programme with scientists from CSIRO as part of the Ningaloo Outlook Project. Year 10 students have been tracking the movements of whale sharks with attached satellite tags. This tracking is part of the 2016 Race Around the World, an initiative of Ecoean and the Department of Education. The Year 10 students also do activities with scientists from the Ningaloo Outlook research project.

It is an exciting time in Science education and the science staff will continually look at new initiatives to keep the students motivated and engaged in Science. This year students in Years 8 to 10 have been able to access on-line interactive science lessons from Cosmos for Schools. These lessons are engaging, interesting and can be accessed at home as well. Hands-on activities are a big part of the Science curriculum and are possible with the help of our fantastic lab-assistant.

Secondary Design & Technology

The Design and Technology learning area focuses on the application of knowledge, skills, technology and resources to satisfy needs and wants and to extend capabilities and realise opportunities.

Design and Technology aims to motivate students and engage them in a range of learning experiences that are transferable to family and home, constructive leisure activities, community contribution and the world of work. Students involved in Design and Technology classes design, plan and produce products from a range of materials, with a focus on Wood and Metal. During the design stage, students are encouraged to utilise as many recycled materials as possible and also create products that are useful in their everyday life.

Every student is encouraged to ENJOY, IMPROVE and STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE!

Primpary Math

The primary staff at Exmouth District High School are dedicated to providing our students with a high quality numeracy program which enables them to progress their mathematical skills and knowledge. All teachers take part in regular professional learning to build upon their knowledge to further assist students.

At the beginning of 2016, teachers were inspired by professional learning with Dr. Paul Swan, on the four proficiencies of the Maths curriculum - understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning. Mental and basic facts are a key focus for our students in Years 1 to 6. Number facts and calculation strategies are explicitly taught in all classrooms.
