Primary Science
The EDHS Primary Science Lab is for all primary students in Years 1 to Year 6. It is a fantastic space for students to explore science concepts, supported with hands on learning activities. We use our investigation process and ensure that we conduct a ‘fair’ test each time by knowing what variables to change, measure and keep the same.
We are developing partnerships with local organisations to deliver rich and meaningful learning experiences with lasting positive memories of education.
Secondary Science
Involves students from Years 7 to 12 and follows the Western Australian Curriculum. Areas of focus include Biological, Physical, Chemical and Earth & Space Sciences. As well, students look at Science as a Human Endeavour and develop the skills to undertake scientific investigations through Science Inquiry Skills.
Wherever possible, links are made between the amazing environment of our local area and the curriculum. For example our Year 9 students are involved in a turtle tagging programme with scientists from CSIRO as part of the Ningaloo Outlook Project. Year 10 students have been tracking the movements of whale sharks with attached satellite tags. This tracking is part of the 2016 Race Around the World, an initiative of Ecoean and the Department of Education. The Year 10 students also do activities with scientists from the Ningaloo Outlook research project.
It is an exciting time in Science education and the science staff will continually look at new initiatives to keep the students motivated and engaged in Science. This year students in Years 8 to 10 have been able to access on-line interactive science lessons from Cosmos for Schools. These lessons are engaging, interesting and can be accessed at home as well. Hands-on activities are a big part of the Science curriculum and are possible with the help of our fantastic lab-assistant.
