Our School - Principal's Welcome

Principal Mr Gary Stenhouse

On behalf of the staff of our great school, I look forward to forming a positive partnership with the parents of our students so that we can give them the best opportunities to prosper academically, socially and emotionally. As leader of this school it is my privilege and responsibility to ensure that the four priorities of success for all students, high quality teaching, effective leadership and strong governance and support are at the forefront of everything we do at Exmouth District High School.

The Exmouth School opened in February 1965, in temporary quarters, with a total of 29 students. This was a small beginning, but the future growth and development of the school was assured by the establishment of the US Naval Communication Station on North West Cape. An agreement between the Governments of Western Australia and the United States of America ensured that the educational needs of both nationalities were met.

ith the withdrawal of the United States Navy from the Cape in 1992, the labour force required to maintain the facilities of the base was taken over by an Australian civilian contractor. The previously high proportion of American children in the student population reduced significantly. Today Exmouth District High School is a modern and dynamic centre of learning.

The School Population
Currently the school caters for approximately 445 students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Over thirty teachers are appointed to the school, covering the specialised needs of the various year levels and secondary subject areas.

There is approximately thirty suppor
t staff (education assistants, cleaners and gardeners) who are also employed at the school to support the teaching program and the maintenance of the grounds and buildings.

School Profile Overview
We are an Independent Public School (IPS) which enables us to merit select our staff. This ensures we meet the needs of our school community and maintain a high performance and high care culture. With over 30 teaching staff, the specialised needs of the various year levels and secondary subject areas are ably covered. Teaching staff are well supported with approximately 30 clerical staff, education assistants, cleaners and gardeners. These invaluable members of our school team support the teachers, the learning program and maintenance of the grounds and buildings.

The senior secondary section of the school is growing. We offer a wide range of subjects via the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) and provide face to face teaching in ATAR English, Mathematics and Human Biology as well as General English and Mathematics.

Exmouth District High School has an exciting future.
