Primary Mathematics

The primary staff at Exmouth District High School are dedicated to providing our students with a high-quality numeracy program which enables them to progress their mathematical skills and knowledge. All teachers take part in regular professional learning to build upon their knowledge to further assist students.

Two Lead Numeracy Teachers provide support and guidance in best practice on the four proficiencies of the Maths curriculum – understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning. Mental and basic facts are a key focus for our students in Years 1 to 6. Number facts and calculation strategies are explicitly taught in all classrooms.

Primary maths lessons are planned in line with our Beacon Instructional Model using Explicit Instruction strategies. Relevant maths vocabulary is taught at the beginning of each unit. Daily Reviews support mental fluency and regular recall of previously taught concepts. Students’ cognitive load is supported with guided notes in maths journals.
