Primary Mathematics
The Primary staff at Exmouth District High School are committed to delivering a high-quality numeracy program that enables students to develop and extend their mathematical skills and understanding. Teachers work collaborate to plan, review and refine teaching programs, ensuring consistency and high expectations for all students. A strong emphasis is placed on mental computation, mathematics language and automaticity of basic facts from Pre-Primary to Year 6. Our whole-school use of the Maths Trek program supports the explicit teaching and systematic development of number knowledge, strategies and fluency.
Primary mathematics lessons are planned in alignment with our Beacon Instructional Model and delivered using Explicit Instruction strategies. Key mathematical vocabulary is introduced at the beginning of each unit to build conceptual understanding. Daily Reviews strengthen mental fluency and support the retrieval of previously taught concepts. Students’ cognitive load is carefully managed through the use of structured guided notes in their mathematics journals, enabling them to focus on deepening their understanding.
